These are a few of my favorite things

Cat holding a camera When it comes to subjects to photograph, even in my own home there’s no shortage of them. From my husband to my children to my cats to my dog, to even mundane stationery objects that can be quite beautiful in the natural afternoon sunlight, there’s always something I can focus my lens on. But to be honest, my favorite subjects are my cats, simply because they’re the only creatures in this house to hold still enough for long enough! My kids are always on the move, and my dog is so eager to track my every move that I do no more than blink and she’s up and out of whatever prone position she was in.

If you’re lucky enough to have a few different colored cats, as I do, then you’ll know that certain ambiance and colors work better with certain colors. My dark gray cat, for example, looks great against pink and pale green sheets, with natural sunlight as the light source. But he looks washed out under our kitchen lights, and seems to clash badly with our blue leather recliner. Then there’s our white cat — the blue leather recliner seems to bring out the green of his eyes, while natural sunlight tends to wash him out and cause his black & silver markings to fade.

What types of lighting work best in your house?
